NASA fits 265,000 galaxies into a single ‘Hubble Legacy Field’ image

NASA fits 265,000 galaxies into a single ‘Hubble Legacy Field’ imageAstronomers have assembled the most all-encompassing image of space ever created. It puts together 16 years of data captured from the Hubble Space Telescope, according to a statement from NASA. All together, the composite is made up of nearly 7,500 individual exposures. Dubbed the "Hubble Legacy Field," this wide view image shows around 265,000 galaxies. These galaxies go back 13.3 billion years to 500 million years after the big bang, showcasing how they have changed over time. This latest Hubble mosaic consists of around 30 times as many galaxies as previous deep fields did. For example, the eXtreme Deep Field (XDF) which was put together in 2012 and is included in the Hubble Legacy Field, contains 5,500 galaxies."The faintest and farthest galaxies are just one ten-billionth the brightness of what the human eye can see," NASA said in its statement.SEE ALSO: Feast your eyes on this spectacular Hubble photo of a spiral galaxyThe findings from 31 different Hubble programs came together in order to assemble this image. According to NASA, no image will surpass the Hubble Legacy Field until the next generation of space telescopes are launched. "Now that we have gone wider than in previous surveys, we are harvesting many more distant galaxies in the largest such dataset ever produced by Hubble," said Garth Illingworth, who led the Hubble Legacy Field image team. "This one image contains the full history of the growth of galaxies in the universe, from their time as 'infants' to when they grew into fully fledged 'adults.'" "The expectation is that this survey will lead to an even more coherent, in-depth and greater understanding of the universe's evolution in the coming years," he added. The James Webb Space Telescope, which will give astronomers an even deeper look into the legacy field, is expected to launch in 2021. U.S. Dispatches Carrier Group to Middle East to Send ‘Clear and Unmistakeable’ Message to Iran

U.S. Dispatches Carrier Group to Middle East to Send 'Clear and Unmistakeable' Message to IranThe Trump administration has dispatched an aircraft carrier group to the Middle East in order to demonstrate U.S. resolve to the Iranian regime, national security adviser John Bolton announced Sunday evening."[A]ny attack on United States interests or on those of our allies will be met with unrelenting force," Bolton said. "The United States is not seeking war with the Iranian regime, but we are fully prepared to respond to any attack, whether by proxy, the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, or regular Iranian forces."The USS Abraham Lincoln and its accompanying aircraft strike group will travel from the Mediterranean Sea to to the U.S. Central Command, an area that includes the Arabian Sea and Persian Gulf. The decision was reached following "clear indications" that Iranian and Iranian proxy forces were planning to attack U.S. forces in the Middle East, the Associated Press reported Monday.Speaking to reporters aboard his flight to Europe on Sunday, Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said plans to dispatch the decision was made in response to a series of "escalatory actions" by the Iranians but would not specify as to what those were."It is absolutely the case that we have seen escalatory actions from the Iranians and it is equally the case that we will hold the Iranians accountable for attacks on American interests," Pompeo said. "If these actions take place, if they do by some third-party proxy, a militia group, Hezbollah, we will hold the Iranian leadership directly accountable for that."The move comes after the Trump administration officially designated Iran's Revolutionary Guard Corps a terrorist group and eliminated all exemptions for foreign nations purchasing Iranian oil.

Meet the Iskander: Russia's Latest Navy-Killer Missile?

Meet the Iskander: Russia's Latest Navy-Killer Missile? But also note that the DF-26 has an estimated range of 2,500 miles, much greater than a Kalibr or an Iskander-M. A 300-mile missile may be a useful coastal defense weapon in confined waters like the Baltic or Black Seas, enabling Russia to prevent NATO ships from getting too close to its territory. But it's not a long-range access denial weapon.First, China developed long-range "carrier-killer" ballistic missiles. Now, Russia's Iskander ballistic missile system may have the same mission.(This first appeared late last year.)In late July and early August, Russia conducted two simulated "electronic launches" of the 9K720 Iskander-M (NATO code name, SS-26 Stone) against ships in the Black Sea, according to Russian media."An 'electronic' launch likely means a field combat simulation where the missile unit prepares and performs all procedures for a real-world launch without firing a live missile," explains the Russian Defense Policy blog. But exactly which missile did Russia pretend to launch? The Iskander, developed in the 1970s as a replacement for the Scud, is a road-based mobile launch system that can fire several models of ballistic and cruise missiles. The  Iskander-M is a single-stage ballistic missile, armed with a conventional or nuclear warhead, and a range of 500 kilometers (311 miles).

Venezuela: Russia urges US to abandon ‘irresponsible’ plan to topple Maduro

Venezuela: Russia urges US to abandon 'irresponsible' plan to topple MaduroSecretary of state meanwhile slammed Russian meddling in the country: 'We don't want anyone messing around with Venezuela'The Russian foreign minister, Sergei Lavrov, right, and Venezuela's foreign minister, Jorge Arreaza, give a press conference in Moscow on Sunday. Photograph: Kirill Kudryavtsev/AFP/Getty ImagesWashington and Moscow traded barbs over Venezuela on Sunday, with Russia's foreign minister urging the United States to abandon its "irresponsible" plan to depose Nicolás Maduro and his US counterpart slamming Russian meddling in the South American country.Sergei Lavrov made the comments during a visit to Moscow by Venezuela's foreign minister, Jorge Arreaza – an apparent bid to stress international support for Maduro following last week's abortive uprising against him in Caracas."Attempts to stage a violent upheaval in Caracas have nothing to do with democratic process, and only disrupt any prospects of political settlement," Lavrov said, according to the Moscow-backed broadcaster RT.Any US attempt to topple Maduro through force would bring "grave consequences", Lavrov reportedly warned.Earlier, the US secretary of state, Mike Pompeo, urged Russia – which, alongside China, is one of Maduro's two key international backers – to stop interfering in Venezuela."We want [Venezuela] to be an autonomous, independent sovereign state, with democratic elected officials. This is what we desire for the Venezuelan people," Pompeo, who is due to meet Lavrov in Finland on Monday, told Fox News."We don't want anyone messing around with Venezuela."The exchange came after Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin held a 90-minute phone call on Friday, after which Trump claimed Putin was "not looking at all to get involved in Venezuela, other than he'd like to see something positive happen".Five days after Tuesday's dramatic pre-dawn attempt to remove Maduro, an uneasy calm has returned to the streets of Venezuela's capital. The only reminders of the failed revolt are stretches of scorched asphalt outside La Carlota airbase beside which it began and a handful of graffitied messages left by protesters on a nearby overpass. "Freedom! Freedom! No more bullets!" reads one.On Saturday, Venezuela's opposition held a series of anti-Maduro protests designed to maintain the pressure. But attendance was far short of the massive demonstrations held since Juan Guaidó – the man most western governments now recognize as Venezuela's legitimate interim president – launched his US-backed challenge to Maduro in January.Sol Castro, a retired university professor who attended one protest in west Caracas, said she feared the solution to Venezuela's crisis increasingly appeared to lie in foreign hands."[It feels like] we may be approaching an end … but [also] that we're only pawns in a larger game where superpowers, or former superpowers, or superpower wannabes will decide when and how this ends," Castro said.

Total to buy Anadarko's Africa assets if Occidental wins takeover fight

Total to buy Anadarko's Africa assets if Occidental wins takeover fightFrench energy giant Total said it has reached a deal with Occidental to acquire Anadarko Petroleum's oil and gas assets in Africa -- but only if the mid-sized US firm Occidental wins its fierce takeover battle for Anadarko with the much bigger Chevron. The move further bolsters Occidental's hostile takeover bid for Anadarko after American mega-investor Warren Buffett's Berkshire Hathaway got involved last week, investing $10 billion in Occidental. Anadarko's board had already approved an offer from Chevron when Occidental unveiled a higher bid last month, kicking off a tug-of-war over the company's assets in the shale-rich Permian Basin in Texas.

Video shows Apple’s new iPhone 11 design with one change we’re not so sure we like

Posted: 06 May 2019 05:17 AM PDT

Video shows Apple's new iPhone 11 design with one change we're not so sure we likeApple isn't always first when it comes to introducing new smartphone features. The company is known for taking its time and getting things right rather than trying to be first to market. Just ask Samsung about the travesty that is the Galaxy Fold and you'll understand why Apple is more than happy to do things well instead of just doing them quickly. When it comes to smartphone design, however, Apple has always been a trendsetter. Most people likely don't even remember what smartphones used to look like before the first iPhone debuted in 2007. Fast-forward a decade, and rival smartphone makers still scramble to copy Apple's every move. 2018 was indeed a rough year for smartphone fans since just about every handset out there was nothing but a boring iPhone X copycat, but 2019 is going in a completely different direction. In fact, something quite interesting is happening this year: For the first time since companies like Samsung and others popularized the phablet form factor, Android companies are actually moving away from copying Apple and starting to come up with their own novel designs. The upcoming iPhone 11, iPhone 11 Max, and iPhone 11R (if that's what Apple ends up calling it) are shaping up to be nearly identical to their predecessors in terms of design. There will some refinements here and there, and we know that it's going to put Android phones to shame when it comes to fit and finish. But overall, the iPhone 11 design we've seen leak time and time again is anything but exciting and new. Now, a new video has taken the information from all the leaks we've seen over the past few weeks and used it to show us what Apple's next-generation flagship iPhone models will look like.We still have more than four months to go before Apple announces its new iPhone 11 series smartphones, but the leaks have really picked up over the past month or so. Long story short, we now likely know just about everything there is to know about Apple's iPhone 11 and iPhone 11 Max design. The image above shows what will likely end up being the iPhone 11's only distinguishing feature as far as hardware design goes. The front of the iPhone 11 will look exactly like the front of the iPhone XS and the front of the iPhone X -- an all-screen design interrupted by a large notch at the top of the screen. Around back, however, both the iPhone 11 and the iPhone 11 Max are expected to have a large square camera array consisting of three camera lenses and an LED flash. Only, it won't actually end up looking like it does in the render above, because we recently learned that Apple has a pretty big change planned for the rear camera on its iPhone 11 series phones. In the iPhone 11 Max render above, the phone itself is gold but the area around the cameras is black. Like other smartphone makers out there, this is the design Apple has always used on its iPhones. This year, however, word from the world's most accurate Apple insider suggests that Apple has decided to color-match the iPhone 11's rear camera so that it blends in with the rest of the back of the phone. Honestly, we're not so sure how we feel about the change. It looks pretty good in the render above, but this render uses some shading on the sapphire crystal to darken the glass. As a result, there's still some contrast between the back of the phone and the camera array. The actual iPhone 11 models Apple releases later this year obviously won't have any shading on the sapphire crystal, and now a new video created by graphic designer Gunho Lee shows us what Apple's next-generation iPhones will look like with color-matched cameras.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FxsWPUfmn74We'll obviously have to wait to pass a final judgement until we see the real iPhone 11 series phones Apple unveils this coming September. For the time being, however, we're not so sure we like this change.

How Iran Could Strike the U.S. Military In a War (And It Won't Be Pretty)

Posted: 06 May 2019 01:01 AM PDT

How Iran Could Strike the U.S. Military In a War (And It Won't Be Pretty)America is sending bombers and an aircraft carrier battle group to the region. What happens now? The facts are simple: Washington and Tehran are locked into a long-term geopolitical contest throughout the Middle East that will span decades—a similar contest in many ways to Washington and Beijing's battle for influence in the Asia-Pacific and wider Indo-Pacific regions. Over the long term, the U.S.-Iranian struggle throughout the Middle East could very well be a mini-Thucydides trap, to steal the phrase from my beloved Harvard's resident geostrategic guru, Graham Allison—the classic tale of how when a rising power meets an established power, war is oftentimes the most common result (eleven out of fifteen times, per Allison).(This first appeared in 2015.)(Recommended: Is It Time to Bring Back the Battleships?)Taking such a long view of U.S.-Iranian relations only reveals stormy seas ahead. No serious foreign-policy or national-security mind can see a long-term partnership beyond maybe short-term alignments in Iraq and decreased tensions from Iran putting its nuclear program on ice for ten years (Remember, folks: In ten years, Iran can slowly expand its nuclear program, and in fifteen years, it has no restrictions on the amount of uranium it wishes to produce...then what?).Looking at any map reveals a whole host of challenges.

Maduro rallies military as Venezuela opposition appeals to troops

Maduro rallies military as Venezuela opposition appeals to troopsVenezuelan President Nicolas Maduro urged his troops Saturday to be "ready" for potential US military action, as a limited number of opposition supporters marched on military barracks in a bid to win the armed forces' support. The small turnout for the Saturday marches -- with participants in the hundreds, not the thousands -- is another setback for opposition leader Juan Guaido, following a failed military uprising earlier in the week. Underscoring the continued military support for his socialist regime, Maduro delivered his televised address from a base in northwestern Cojedes state -- where he appeared alongside his defense minister, Vladimir Padrino, and in the presence of more than 5,000 troops.

Cheeky kid flips off TV crew in the middle of live broadcast

Cheeky kid flips off TV crew in the middle of live broadcastIt's one of the perils of live TV: Someone out there is going to ruin the shot.Even in the quaint surrounds of Windsor in the UK, where a reporter for Australian show Sunrise was upstaged by a kid in a passing car on Sunday night.SEE ALSO: Kids hack dad's facial recognition lock in easiest way possibleWindsor Castle is one of the official residences for the British Royal Family, where the Queen usually spends her weekends -- and where reporter Edwina Bartholomew was covering the imminent arrival of the royal baby of Meghan and Harry, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex. While the castle might be a place of good etiquette, don't expect that on the streets of Windsor, where you might be accosted by a kid who'll flip you off for fun."Speaking of bad parenting, what about that little kid who pulled up behind me before," Bartholomew said on Sunrise. "What a little rotter." While flipping off a live TV crew is admittedly pretty funny for the rest of us, unfortunately for the kid, the video evidence won't help him when his parents eventually find out.> Gee I hope that wasn't little Prince George on his way to visit his new cousin.... https://t.co/U0iY1cGigL> > -- Bianca Stone (@Bianca_Stone) May 5, 2019> Stay classy, Windsor royalbaby https://t.co/vAtKvA8iae> > -- Edwina Bartholomew (@edwina_b) May 5, 2019 WATCH: Burger King launches line of 'Unhappy Meals' in honor of Mental Health Awareness Month

Getting a measles vaccination isn't a personal choice – it's a social responsibility

Getting a measles vaccination isn't a personal choice – it's a social responsibilityThe core issue is the common good. Measles travels through the air – and if enough people opt out of vaccinations, they put everyone at a higher risk 'Parents have a right to choose what happens to their own children, of course. But the right isn't absolute.' Photograph: Johannes Eisele/AFP/Getty Images I remember having measles as a kid. Believe me, it was no fun. Also, measles could cause birth defects if a pregnant women got infected. If you were elderly, measles could be fatal. Eventually, after vaccinations became nearly universal in America, measles was declared eliminated from the US in 2000. But now the measles are back – already surpassing 700 cases this year, in 22 states. So far, 66 people have been hospitalized, a third of them with pneumonia. What happened? We stopped vaccinating everyone. More than 500 of the new cases are in people who had not been vaccinated. Last Monday, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention renewed an urgent call for parents to have their children vaccinated. We stopped vaccinating all children because some parents have had religious objections. Others haven't liked the idea of injecting a live virus into their little ones. Some just never got around to it. And some parents – succumbing to growing skepticism about science and burgeoning conspiracy theories – believe vaccinations cause autism. The claim has been promoted by Russian internet trolls as well as Donald Trump. In a 2015 presidential debate, Trump told of an employee with a two-year-old daughter who "went to have the vaccine and came back and a week later got a tremendous fever, got very, very sick, now is autistic". Trump has finally stopped pushing this lie. Last week he tersely said "they have to get the shots", which is about as much of a concession to the truth anyone can expect from America's liar-in-chief. In reality there's zero evidence connecting measles vaccine to autism. Let's be clear. To eradicate measles – and other dread diseases such as tuberculosis, polio and tetanus (which also protects from whooping cough and diphtheria) – parents must have their children vaccinated. Parents have a right to choose what happens to their own children, of course. But the right isn't absolute. Parents who abuse their children may lose custody of them. Courts have ordered that children with cancer receive chemotherapy despite their parent's objections. There are also the interests of other children and of society overall. Measles travels through the air. The virus can live for hours after an infected person has coughed or sneezed. The core issue here is the common good. If enough people are vaccinated, everyone benefits. But if enough people decide to opt out of vaccinations, for whatever reason, they put everyone at a higher risk of contracting disease. So what's the incentive to get yourself and your child vaccinated when you might prefer to rely on everyone else vaccinating themselves and their kids instead? Partly it's laws that make vaccination compulsory. Yet right now only three states require vaccinations for children to attend kindergarten without any nonmedical exceptions. Most states give parents a pass if they have religious objections. Nearly 20 states don't even require that objections be religious – any objection will do. So the first step is for all states to require vaccinations, or for the federal government to step in and make them mandatory. At the most fundamental level, vaccination comes down to a duty inherent in being a member of a society But not even a universal legal requirement would be adequate if enough parents were determined to thwart it. So at the most fundamental level, vaccination comes down to a duty inherent in being a member of a society. In all sorts of ways, each of us might prefer to rely on everyone else doing certain things so we don't have to – whether following mundane norms such as not littering or of giving up our seat on the bus to an older person, or simply obeying laws that are rarely or inadequately enforced, or taking on more heroic roles like teaching in a poor school, being a social worker, serving in the armed services or acting as a first responder. The idea of the common good was once widely understood and accepted in America. After all, the US constitution was designed for "We the people" seeking to "promote the general welfare" – not for "me the selfish person seeking to do whatever I want for myself and my family". Yet the common good is no longer a fashionable idea. We celebrate our personal freedom on Independence Day but pay less heed to our interdependence. We relish our bill of rights but are less attentive to what might be called our bill of responsibilities. Some demagogues insist our national identity depends on the whiteness of our skin, our European heritage and our English language. And on keeping "others" out. Rubbish. Our identity depends on the ideals we share and our willingness to sacrifice for the good we hold in common. Measles are back, largely because some people have stopped vaccinating themselves and their kids against them. Vaccination against measles and other dread diseases isn't just a personal choice. It's a social responsibility. If we really want to make America great again, social responsibility is the place to begin. Bernie Sanders promises help for family farms, rural residents on trip to Iowa

Posted: 05 May 2019 01:47 PM PDT

Bernie Sanders promises help for family farms, rural residents on trip to IowaU.S. presidential contender Bernie Sanders unveiled a plan on Sunday to help family farmers and rural residents, promising to break up corporate agricultural monopolies and invest heavily in social and economic programs in struggling rural communities. Sanders, an independent U.S. senator and fierce corporate critic, said on a campaign trip to Iowa that rural areas were being devastated by agribusiness consolidations that hoarded profits, drove family farmers off their land and contributed to growing environmental and social problems. "We cannot create an economy that works for all Americans if we continue to neglect the needs of rural America," Sanders said in Osage, Iowa, during a visit to the farm state that kicks off the 2020 Democratic presidential nominating race next February.
