Notre Dame attacker a self-radicalised novice: prosecutor Posted: 10 Jun 2017 01:43 PM PDT An Algerian man who attacked a policeman with a hammer outside Notre Dame cathedral was a loner with a deep interest in Islamic State jihadist propaganda, the Paris prosecutor said Saturday. Farid Ikken, a 40-year-old doctorate student, was shot and wounded by another policeman during Tuesday's attack in which he shouted: "This is for Syria". Paris prosecutor Francois Molins said Ikken was an educated man who under questioning told investigators he had radicalised himself over a period of 10 months. |

Buy this house and you'll live in 2 countries at once Posted: 10 Jun 2017 02:37 PM PDT Can't decide whether to live in Canada or the United States? Even in the current political climate? Okay. Well, if you buy this house in Vermont, you'll straddle the border between the two countries. In fact, there's a border marker right outside the front door. But right now, Brian and Joan DuMoulin, who own the property in the community of Beebe Plain, say they're having trouble finding a buyer. For one thing, the house needs a lot of work. For another, heightened post-9/11 security restrictions have made it occasionally awkward to traverse the grounds. Brian explained to TIME, for example, that Joan and her sister once had to report to Canadian border patrol because a new agent didn't recognize them. SEE ALSO: Justin Trudeau casually kayaks over to talk to his constituents Image: Zillow"If there is an awkwardness, it's that you can't just go this way or that way, you've got to go through [the ports of entry] and then back through." Still, if that seems worth it, and you don't mind a little Chip and Joanna-esque Fixer Upper action, it seems like a lovely house in a lovely community — and it's available for both Canadians and Americans to purchase. Bonus: armed 24-hour security from two powerful nations! Check out the listing here. WATCH: Harry Potter's childhood home is now for sale |

Three US soldiers killed in Afghan 'insider attack' Posted: 10 Jun 2017 05:16 PM PDT An Afghan commando who opened fire on American troops killed three of them and wounded another, US and Afghan officials said, in an insider attack that was claimed by the Taliban. The so-called "green-on-blue" attack on Saturday is the latest in a line of incidents where Afghan soldiers have turned their weapons on international forces they are working with. It also comes as the Taliban ramp up their campaign against the Western-backed government in Afghanistan, and as US President Donald Trump mulls sending more troops into the lengthy conflict. |

Ukrainians cheer on first day of visa-free EU travel Posted: 11 Jun 2017 04:42 AM PDT Ukrainians were on Sunday celebrating the first day of visa-free access to the European Union, with thousands crossing the border as President Petro Poroshenko proclaimed a dramatic "exit" from Moscow's grip. The move is symbolic for Kiev, where a pro-EU revolt in 2014 toppled the previous Russia-backed government and was followed by Moscow's annexation of the Crimea peninsula sparking a protracted ongoing conflict with pro-Russian separatists in eastern Ukraine. "The visa-free regime for Ukraine has started! Glory to Europe! Glory to Ukraine!" Poroshenko tweeted early Sunday as many travellers started crossing the border and posting selfies. |

AP Explains: Qatar's ties with Iran and Islamist groups Posted: 11 Jun 2017 01:33 PM PDT DUBAI, United Arab Emirates (AP) — The political crisis engulfing Qatar stems from accusations by its Arab neighbors that it supports terrorism. Qatar denies the allegations, but its ties with Iran and embrace of various Islamist groups have brought intense scrutiny, made it a regional outlier and created enough smoke to suggest a fire. Last week, Saudi Arabia, Egypt, the United Arab Emirates and Bahrain severed ties with Qatar amid a slew of punitive measures. On Friday, the four Arab states upped the pressure by naming 59 people and several charities linked to Qatar on a terrorist list. |
Amazon’s rare sale on Sonos speakers is too good to pass up Posted: 12 Jun 2017 07:43 AM PDT Sonos shrugged off the new HomePod speaker that Apple unveiled during WWDC 2017 last week, which isn't much of a surprise. The HomePod looks like it has a lot to offer, but it won't be anywhere near as versatile or as flexible as Sonos' wireless speaker solution when it comes to speaker variety and to supported services. Music fans know that Sonos is the best in the business, and right now you have a rare opportunity to save some cash on two of the most popular Sonos speakers on the market. From now until the end of the week, Amazon is shaving $50 off a Sonos Play:1 two-pack, and the Sonos SUB Wireless Subwoofer is $100 off. Definitely grab them while supplies last! Passengers on the plane were evacuated using the emergency slides. |

Puerto Ricans are heading for polling stations as the island's fifth plebiscite in 50 years on whether to become the 51st state of the United States gets under way. Delaware first state under Donald Trump to ensure abortion stays legal Posted: 10 Jun 2017 04:52 PM PDT Delaware has become the first US state since Donald Trump became president to ensure that abortion will remain legal, even if the US leader appoints judges who will rule against abortion rights. Democratic Governor John Carney Jr signed into law a bill that removed restrictions on abortions from state law, making Delaware the eighth state to guarantee women the right to an abortion. As a presidential candidate, Mr Trump vowed to nominate judges to the Supreme Court who would help overturn Roe v Wade, the landmark 1973 decision that established a woman's constitutional right to an abortion under the Fourteenth Amendment. |

The story of prisoner 5770102414 Posted: 11 Jun 2017 09:00 AM PDT When she was inmate 5770102414 in a Thai prison, Prontip Mankong had ample opportunity for despair. Each night she slept with 70 to 80 other women, mostly drug offenders, on the linoleum floor of her cell. Her sleeping space was just over a foot wide; not enough room to lie on her back, so she slept on her side. For bedding, she had three sackcloths: one for a pillow, one for a blanket, and one to cover the floor. The fluorescent lights stayed on all night. |

Iraqi girl reunited with family 3 years after IS abduction Posted: 10 Jun 2017 12:11 PM PDT The Ashti camp in Iraq's northern city of Arbil on Saturday celebrated the return of a girl whose abduction by jihadists three years ago sent shockwaves through her Christian community. Joy filled the prefab unit that is now the home of six-year-old Christina Ezzo Obada's family, who were forced to flee the town of Qaraqosh, which lies between Arbil and Mosul and was taken over by the Islamic State group in mid-2014. More than five months after her abduction by IS, Aida heard through acquaintances that her daughter had ended up with a family of 12 in the Tenek neighbourhood of west Mosul. |
FDA Asks Drug Company to Pull Painkiller in First Posted: 11 Jun 2017 11:36 PM PDT The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) announced today (June 8) that it has requested that Endo Pharmaceuticals, a drug company, remove the opioid painkiller Opana ER from the drug market. This is the first time that the federal agency has requested that a drug company voluntarily stop selling a medication because of the risk of abuse that the drug carries, the FDA said in a statement. If the company does not choose to do so voluntarily, the FDA will force the issue by withdrawing its approval for the drug. |
US-backed force pierces into IS Syria bastion from west Posted: 10 Jun 2017 09:59 AM PDT US-backed Syrian fighters broke into the western part of the Islamic State group's stronghold Raqa on Saturday, they and a monitor said, opening up a second front inside the northern Syrian city. The Syrian Democratic Forces alliance of Kurdish and Arab fighters has spent months tightening the noose on IS-held Raqa and entered the city for the first time earlier this week from the east, backed by US-led coalition air strikes. On Saturday, they pierced into Raqa from the west, according to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights monitoring group. |

Macron's takeover of French politics is all but complete Posted: 11 Jun 2017 02:34 PM PDT PARIS (AP) — Emmanuel Macron's takeover of French politics is all but complete. Libyan group says it has freed Kadhafi son Seif al-Islam Posted: 10 Jun 2017 02:06 PM PDT An armed group in Libya said on Facebook Saturday it has freed Seif al-Islam, the son of dead dictator Moamer Kadhafi who has been in custody since November 2011. The Abu Bakr al-Sadiq Brigade, a militia of former rebels that controls the town of Zintan in western Libya, said Seif al-Islam was freed Friday evening, "the 14th day of the month of Ramadan", under an amnesty law promulgated by the parliament based in the east. The North African country has rival administrations, with the authorities in the east not recognising the UN-backed Government of National Accord (GNA) based in the capital. |
Teen Pot Use Linked to Illegal Drug Use by Age 21, Study Suggests Posted: 11 Jun 2017 11:34 PM PDT Teens who regularly or occasionally use pot are more likely to take other illegal drugs or use other harmful substances by age 21, a new study suggests, adding weight to the idea that marijuana does indeed act as a "gateway" to the use of other drugs. Researchers found that teenagers in the study who regularly used marijuana were 26 times more likely to have used other illegal drugs, such as cocaine, amphetamines or hallucinogens, by the time they reached early adulthood, compared with teens who hadn't smoked pot, according to the findings published online today (June 7) in the Journal of Epidemiology and Community Health. The study also revealed that the teens who typically used marijuana once a week or more were 37 times more likely to be hooked on nicotine, and three times more likely to have harmful drinking habits by age 21 than their peers who did not use marijuana. |

Netanyahu urges UN to dismantle its Palestinian aid agency Posted: 10 Jun 2017 05:31 PM PDT Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu called Sunday for the United Nations to shut down its Palestinian refugee aid agency, saying it was responsible for incitement against the Jewish state. Netanyahu said he raised the issue during the visit in recent days of Washington's UN envoy Nicky Haley, who has accused the United Nations of bias against Israel. "I told her that the time had come for the United Nations to reconsider the continued existence of UNRWA," his office quoted him as saying, referring to the UN Relief and Welfare Agency. |
