iOS 11 has an awesome feature that’ll free up storage space on your iPhone

iOS 11 has an awesome feature that'll free up storage space on your iPhone

Even though Apple has slowly and perhaps reluctantly increased the available storage tiers on the iPhone, running out of storage space remains a frustrating reality that many users still have to contend with. After all, with users loading up their devices with high-res photos, Live Photos, 4K videos, and an endless number of apps, it's easier than ever to stretch the limit of even a 128GB device.

To help ease the strain, Apple with iOS 11 has introduced a new setting which provides users with more granular storage management controls. Specifically, iOS 11 now enables users to get a clearer snapshot of where their storage is being used up while also providing quick solutions help to clear up space.

Originally brought to light by Ryan Jones, iOS 11 houses a revamped storage section that allows users to quickly identify and delete uncharacteristically large attachments from the Messages app. This is a welcome improvement from the current incarnation of iOS where users have to select individual conversations, check for attachments or images, and then delete them. This works well enough, but sometimes it's not readily apparent what conversations are using up more than their fair share of storage.

iOS 11, in contrast, streamlines the entire process.

Not only that, but MacRumors points out that iOS 11 will now give users some recommendations for clearing up space as well.

All in all, the new storage features above are highly welcome, if not long overdue. Apple has made managing device storage much easier in recent years, but iOS 11 appears to give users more control over their devices than ever before.

There’s a giant hole on Mars, and scientists can’t figure out where it came from

Posted: 06 Jun 2017 04:19 PM PDT

There's a giant hole on Mars, and scientists can't figure out where it came fromHumans have now had rovers active on Mars for almost two full decades, which is enough time that we've learned plenty about the Martian landscape. We know all about the soil, the geography, and even the places where water most likely flowed free on the surface of the red planet at one time, but we still don't know everything. One place in particular, in the souther hemisphere of Mars, is giving scientists some serious grief. It's a massive pit, and nobody knows how it got there. Located in an area of the planet nicknamed "Swiss Cheese" thanks to its pockmarked ice fields — made of carbon dioxide, not H2O — the pit is confusing for a couple of reasons. For one, it doesn't show the telltale signs of being caused by an impact, and there isn't a well-defined debris field. If it is indeed a crater caused by an asteroid striking the planet, much of its character has long since worn away. The other theory on the table is that it could be simply a recess in the terrain caused by a collapse underneath. If that's the case, the cause could be any number of things, including flowing water or even lava. Such a determination would likely need to be made by studying the feature close-up, but unfortunately the rovers currently cruising around the planet aren't exactly in a position to make an impromptu visit. For now, the mysterious pit will remain an anomaly, and we'll all be left wondering if it's just a run-of-the-mill geographical quirk, or if a race of gigantic space worms once roamed the red planet.

YouTube’s most famous PC builder isn’t happy about Intel’s Core i9

YouTube's most famous PC builder isn't happy about Intel's Core i9

Last week, Intel dropped the biggest PC news of the last year. The new Core i9 processor series appears to be a big change from the status quo, an attempt to put insanely powerful processors within the reach of home PC builders.

By and large, the PC community had the exact reaction you'd expect: excitement, followed by frantic checking of bank accounts. But for Linus Sebastian, the brains behind Linus Tech Tips and YouTube's most famous PC nerd, the reality of Intel's new product lineup doesn't match the hype.

In a fifteen-minute rant, Sebastian explains what he thinks are Intel's less-than-honest motives behind the new i9 and X-series processors and motherboards. You should watch the video to get an understanding of the technical details he's picking on, but the bottom line is that he thinks Intel cooked up the i9 platform as a response to AMD's new Threadripper series, not as an honest attempt to push home computing forwards.

There's a number of little details that do point that way. Intel has hinted that a lot of the top-end performance of its new chips will be handicapped if you don't also buy Intel motherboards and Intel SSDs, which is quite blatantly not in the best interests of high-end PC builders.

And then there's the problem of vaporware. Most of the really exciting stuff that Intel announced last week won't be ready until the end of the year, which is a much longer wait-for-availability than Intel usually has after the announcement of a new product. It reeks of the fact that this is a reactionary move to steal the spotlight from AMD, rather than a long-planned rollout of a new product line.

Ultimately, it's the messenger that makes the message in this case. Sebastian's YouTube channel, Linus Tech Tips, is known for a fairly heavy level of commercialization and collaboration with big tech companies, including Intel. You're much more likely to see a video sponsored by Intel than one tearing Intel apart, which makes this particular rant all the more real. For such a big player to break from the script and annoy the biggest processor company on earth isn't a common occurrence, so more than ever it's worth taking note.

Trump renews criticism of London Mayor Khan over attackBy Estelle Shirbon LONDON (Reuters) - U.S. President Donald Trump once again criticized London Mayor Sadiq Khan on Monday over his response to a deadly attack on the city, while the British public and politicians lauded the mayor for his handling of the aftermath. Three jihadis drove a van into pedestrians on London Bridge on Saturday night before running into the bustling Borough Market area where they slit people's throats and stabbed them indiscriminately.

Seoul agreed last year under Moon's ousted predecessor Park Geun-Hye to deploy the powerful missile intercept system to guard against threats from nuclear-armed North Korea despite angry opposition from Beijing, which views it as a threat to its own military capabilities. Two missile launchers have been deployed in the southern county of Seongju, where hundreds of residents have staged fierce protests over what they see as potential environmental hazards posed by the batteries used in the Terminal High Altitude Area Defense (THAAD) system.
