Three ex-Penn State officials get jail in Sandusky child sex abuse coverup Posted: 02 Jun 2017 12:52 PM PDT Three former Pennsylvania State University officials were sentenced to jail on Friday for covering up ex-coach Jerry Sandusky's sexual predations and effectively letting him victimize more boys. In sentencing all three men for child endangerment, Judge John Boccabella in Dauphin County Court of Common Pleas also harshly criticized the late, revered football coach Joe Paterno for failing to alert authorities. Graham Spanier, 68, once the nation's highest-paid public university president, was ordered incarcerated for four to 12 months with two years probation. |

Fresh battle ends bid to free civilians in war-torn Philippine city Posted: 04 Jun 2017 03:55 AM PDT Efforts to rescue up to 2,000 civilians trapped by fighting between troops and Islamist militants in a southern Philippine city failed Sunday when a proposed truce ended in a hail of gunfire and explosions, authorities and witnesses said. The civilians were pinned down nearly two weeks ago in the centre of Marawi on Mindanao island, where gunmen loyal to the Islamic State group are holding out against a military assault. Local authorities said government officials, working through intermediaries, had reached agreement with the militants to observe a four-hour ceasefire Sunday to let the trapped civilians leave. |

Donald Trump hits out at Sadiq Khan and ‘political correctness’ after London Bridge terror attack Posted: 04 Jun 2017 05:58 AM PDT The US President Donald Trump has hit out at Mayor of London Sadiq Khan after the London Bridge terror attack, criticising "political correctness" in apparent bid to make political headway from the outrage. In a series of tweets posted in the aftermath of the attack Mr Trump appeared to take issue with the Mayor's warning that that there was "no need to be alarmed". "We must stop being politically correct and get down to the business of security for our people. |

Residents of historic Israeli settlement say they have returned home Posted: 02 Jun 2017 07:35 PM PDT For Yohanan Ben Yaakov, taking part in the creation of the first Israeli settlement in the occupied West Bank in 1967 was like returning home, he says. Today, Israel's 50-year occupation of Palestinian territory and its continuing settlement building are seen as major stumbling blocks to any peace efforts. |
One girl's simple love of Papa John's pizza gets her into Yale Posted: 02 Jun 2017 10:37 AM PDT College essays may seem super daunting, but for this young woman, having some fun with it totally payed off. Caroline Williams of Brentwood, Tennessee, found out in March that she was accepted into Yale University. This alone would be amazing news for just about anyone, but what made it even more amazing was when Caroline found out exactly why she was accepted. Weeks later, the university's admissions team sent Caroline notes detailing how much they enjoyed her unique and relatable essay on her love of ordering Papa John's pizza. I just want @PapaJohns to know that I wrote a college essay about how much I love to order their pizza and it got me into Yale pic.twitter.com/lDlzEErHCn — Carolina Williams (@justcarolina22) May 9, 2017 The 200-words-or-less prompt asked Caroline to write about what she loves to do. While there's no doubt other applicants wrote about their extracurricular activities in the arts or athletics, Caroline took a different approach. "...[O]ne thing I love to do is order pizza and have it delievered to my house," she wrote. "When the delivery person rings my doorbell, I instantly morph into one of Pavlov's dogs, salivating to the sound that signals the arrival of the cheesy, circular glory. It smells like celebration, as I love to rejoice a happy occasion by calling Papa John's for my favorite food." And admissions found it refreshing and hilarious. "As a fellow lover of pizza, I laughed out loud (then ordered pizza) after reading your application. Yale would be lucky to have you," one member of admissions wrote. SEE ALSO: A teen wrote #BlackLivesMatter on a college application 100 times — and got accepted As excited as she was to receive this news, Caroline will not be attending the Ivy League university come fall. She has instead decided to go to Auburn University, because of the location, school spirit, and of course the Papa John's that's probably in the student center. Her passion for pizza is truly inspiring. WATCH: One restaurant is using robots to make pizza |
NASA’s Hubble captures ‘vermin’ galaxy being super annoying Posted: 02 Jun 2017 03:43 PM PDT Usually, when astronomers, skywatchers, and space researchers are able to catch a glimpse of something in space it's cause for celebration — after all, the images are often jaw-droppingly gorgeous, and with plenty of scientific implications, too. But when it comes to the galaxy hiding behind a star called HD 107146, scientists are just kind of annoyed that it even exists to begin with.
In the image above, HD 107146 is the big blob in the center of the shot, circled in green. The massive mess of yellow, orange, and red dots surrounding it is the mix of various debris stuck in orbit around the star. NASA likens the disc to our Solar System's own collection of asteroids in the Kuiper Belt. It's an exciting place in the cosmos because of how much the star shares with our own sun, but there's a problem: that big bright patch of nonsense in the lower right corner. That glowing half-egg-shaped thing is actually a distant galaxy, called the "Vermin Galaxy." It's much, much farther away than HD 107146, and it's beginning to pass behind the star's debris disk. This event, called transit, will finally wrap up by 2020, at which point researchers will be able to use the light from the galaxy — passing through the debris disk of the star — to make observations and draw conclusions about the content of the debris itself. However, until that happens, only a limited amount of research can be done. Perhaps that's why, as NASA notes, some astronomers are "annoyed at its presence," and have given it a nickname to reflect that. |

A White House spokeswoman referred a request for comment to the Justice Department. |
Colossal crack in Antartica ice shelf about to drop state-sized iceberg into the ocean Posted: 02 Jun 2017 02:13 PM PDT With President Donald Trump announcing that the United States won't be joining a huge number of its allies in supporting the Paris Agreement on climate change rules just a day ago, an extremely troubling development in Antarctica is helping to underscore just how bad of a decision that really was. A crack in the Larsen C ice shelf on the frigid continent has grown rapidly in the past week, and a complete break is expected imminently. When that happens, a chunk of ice as large as the state of Delaware will be released into the ocean, creating one of the world's largest icebergs ever.
The crack, which is currently roughly 120 miles long, has grown by several miles in just the past week, and is now just eight miles from being complete. Researchers are pointing to the accelerated break — called "calving" — as a further sign that human-caused climate change is currently at a tipping point from which we may not be able to recover. The shelf's calving, as troubling as it is on its own, is (unfortunately) just part of a bigger picture. Scientists believe that, once the shelf does make its way freely into the ocean, the event could further destabilize the rest of the glacier, leading to increased break-ups in the immediate future. "When it calves, the Larsen C Ice Shelf will lose more than 10% of its area to leave the ice front at its most retreated position ever recorded," Professor Adrian Luckman of Swansea University College of Science said of the calving. "This event will fundamentally change the landscape of the Antarctic Peninsula." |
Outrage and solidarity from leaders over 'cowardly' London attacks Posted: 04 Jun 2017 06:56 AM PDT British and world leaders condemned the London attack Sunday, reacting with both outrage and solidarity, as Pope Francis urged believers in St Peter's square to pray for the victims. London Mayor Sadiq Khan said the attack was "a deliberate and cowardly attack on innocent Londoners and visitors to our city enjoying their Saturday night," adding: "There is no justification whatsoever for such barbaric acts". Prime Minister Theresa May confirmed that the "terrible incident in London" was being treated as "a potential act of terrorism" and said she would hold emergency ministerial talks later in the day. |

Deadly blasts hit funeral mourners after protests in Afghan capital Posted: 03 Jun 2017 10:42 AM PDT Saturday's blasts shattered an uneasy calm which had descended after authorities blocked the streets of Kabul in a bid to prevent a repeat of the bloody confrontation between protesters and police on Friday. The violence, fueled by public anger over the inability of President Ashraf Ghani's divided government to ensure security in Kabul, has exacerbated political tensions between rival factions, and Ghani issued a call for unity. |

Varadkar becomes Irish PM-in-waiting in social, generational shift Posted: 02 Jun 2017 11:01 AM PDT By Padraic Halpin and Conor Humphries DUBLIN (Reuters) - Ireland's governing Fine Gael party elected Leo Varadkar as its new leader on Friday, choosing the gay, 38-year-old son of an Indian immigrant to succeed Enda Kenny as prime minister in a striking sign of the country's rapid social change. Bar an unexpected development, Varadkar will be voted in as prime minister when parliament next sits on June 13 and become the once-staunchly Catholic country's first openly gay premier and the youngest person ever to hold the office. "If my election today shows anything, it is that prejudice has no hold in this Republic," Varadkar said to huge applause in a speech at Dublin's Mansion House, where Ireland's parliament first sat almost a century ago. |
Iraqi Shi'ite paramilitaries take Baaj town west of Mosul from Islamic State: army Posted: 04 Jun 2017 06:50 AM PDT By Maher Chmaytelli BAGHDAD (Reuters) - Shi'ite paramilitaries have captured the Iraqi town of Baaj from Islamic State, further shrinking the northern region under jihadist control as part of a U.S.-backed campaign to retake the city of Mosul, the Iraqi military said on Sunday. Eight months into the Mosul offensive, Islamic State (IS) militants have been dislodged from all of the city except an enclave along the western bank of the Tigris river. IS's grip on the Iraqi side of the northern region along the border with Syria, a desert area where Iraqi and U.S. sources believe IS leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi is hiding, has been ebbing as forces fighting on the side of Iraq's government have advanced. |

Trump urges end to political correctness in wake of London attack Posted: 04 Jun 2017 07:15 AM PDT By David Morgan WASHINGTON (Reuters) - U.S. President Donald Trump on Sunday urged the world to stop being "politically correct" in order to ensure security, after three attackers drove a van into pedestrians and stabbed revelers in London, killing seven. "We must stop being politically correct and get down to the business of security for our people," Trump wrote on Sunday morning. "If we don't get smart it will only get worse." He continued: "At least 7 dead and 48 wounded in terror attack and Mayor of London says there is 'no reason to be alarmed!'" London Mayor Sadiq Khan -- elected last year and the first Muslim to head a major Western capital -- had earlier said Britons should not be alarmed to see a higher police presence on the streets of London following the incident. |
