Tensions build in feud between Qatar and its neighbors Posted: 07 Jun 2017 11:17 AM PDT A senior Emirati official insisted on Wednesday that Gulf Arab states were not seeking regime change in Doha, as tensions built in a bitter feud between Qatar and its neighbors. Saudi Arabia, Egypt, the UAE and Bahrain announced on Monday they were cutting diplomatic ties and closing air, sea and land links with Qatar, giving Qataris within their borders two weeks to leave. |

Rhino kills conservationist in Rwanda Posted: 08 Jun 2017 07:29 AM PDT A conservationist who was training rangers to track and protect black rhinos in Rwanda has been killed by one of the animals, the organisation he worked for has said in a statement. Information about the exact circumstances of Hungarian Krisztian Gyongyi's death on Wednesday morning in Akagera National Park is "still being gathered", said Peter Fearnhead, the chief executive of Africa Parks. "(This is) a huge loss for all who knew Kris and for rhino conservation across the continent," said Fearnhead, who sent condolences to Gyongyi's family. |
Police dog too friendly for the force gets an adorable new job Posted: 08 Jun 2017 07:12 PM PDT If you want to be a police dog, you've gotta be a bit tough. Gavel, a German Shepherd from Queensland, Australia, isn't. He was ruled too sociable for the frontline by police trainers, and was let go from the training program while he was being fostered at the official residence of the Queensland governor. SEE ALSO: Good dog's TV watching ritual is so freaking adorable Left wondering what to do with the pooch, staff decided to give him a new job as a vice-regal dog, which was made official in February this year. "He has outgrown four ceremonial coats, undergone a career change (his official title is now Gavel VRD, 'Vice-Regal Dog'), and brought untold joy to the lives of the governor, Mrs de Jersey, Government House staff, and the thousands of Queenslanders who have since visited the estate," the office of Governor Paul de Jersey told the BBC. Gavel now spends his time attending functions and welcoming guests to Queensland's Government House, sporting his very own official ceremonial coat bearing the state's coat of arms. Earn minimum wage in the US? You can afford to live in exactly 12 counties Posted: 08 Jun 2017 11:03 AM PDT A person working a full-time minimum-wage job will find it virtually impossible to rent an affordable home anywhere in the US, according to a study that sheds new light the country's housing crisis. The report reveals that there is not a single county or metropolitan area in which a minimum-wage worker can afford a modest two-bedroom home, which the federal government defines as paying less than 30% of a household's income for rent and utilities. This applies even in places that have raised their minimum wage higher than the baseline federal level of $7.25, which equates to around $15,000 a year. |

99-million-year-old bird fossil has been found preserved in amber and it's truly exquisite Posted: 08 Jun 2017 08:35 AM PDT We might just be one step closer to a real life Jurassic Park scenario. A three-inch fossil of a 99-million-year-old baby bird was found in an amber mine in Myanmar. SEE ALSO: T. rex might not have been fluffy, after all The hatchling is the most complete bird preserved in amber that has ever been found from the Cretaceous period, about 65 million years ago, according to a new study published in the journal Gondwana Research. The fossil includes most of the skull and neck, part of a wing and hind leg, and soft tail tissue. Scientists were able to collect data from bone and tissue samples taken from its skull, neck, feet, and wing, and they determined that the hatching was a member of the avian group, Enantiornithes. This is a fantastic specimen: shows previously unknown enfloofinating pattern for birds! It was no more than a few weeks old before it was trapped in the sticky amber and preserved for millions of years, they found. The visual details in the baby bird are stunning, which has the science community on Twitter geeking out. Lida Xing of the China University of Geosciences later identified the claw as the foot of a bird from the Enantiornithes group. Researchers said they're excited about what this new find can bring to the field of paleontology. "Overall, the new specimen brings a new level of detail to our understanding of the anatomy of the juvenile stages of the most species-rich clade of pre-modern birds," they wrote in the study. Apple’s ambitious iPhone 8 design could already be causing problems Posted: 08 Jun 2017 11:59 AM PDT From everything we've heard so far, the iPhone 8 that Apple plans to debut later this year will be a departure from the status quo. Rumored new features include an OLED panel, edge-to-edge display, under-screen fingerprint sensor, and possibly even wireless charging. Any one of those would be a big undertaking for a phone company. Trying to do all four at once is just asking for problems, and according to new supply-chain rumors, problems are exactly what Apple is getting.
Investment bank RBC has told MarketsInsider that a number of key iPhone 8 suppliers are having problems with the specifications and volume of parts needed for the iPhone 8, which could push production back by months. Samsung, the lead OLED panel provider, is reportedly struggling with integrating the fingerprint sensor under the screen. It's "presented challenges," according to RBC, which on its own could delay the phone's launch by months. Broadcom, which manufactures some of the wireless components, and Analog Devices Incorporated, a sensor supplier, have also reportedly seen "slow growth in their supply chains this quarter," which is a fancy way of saying that there's production issues. Going from prototype to full-scale manufacturing is always an issue, and the specs and volume of components that Apple is demanding seems to be causing problems across the board. It's unclear exactly what these delays mean in terms of the launch date for the iPhone 8. Traditionally, Apple has announced its new iPhone every year in September, and had it on shelves two weeks later. This year, it's already expected that Apple will miss that launch date, although some kind of reveal of the device in September (with a launch a couple months later) is still possible. The big question now is whether Apple gets the phone out in time for holiday sales. Sure, the iPhone 8 is expected to drive a "super-cycle" of upgrades regardless, but a bump in sales from Christmas madness would go some way to justifying the insane expectations on iPhone 8 sales. RBC, for its part, doesn't see the delay as a problem, saying "We think a shift in OLED production by 1-2 months doesn't change the demand dynamics for iPhones (fairly captive demand) or undermines the positive iPhone upgrade cycle narrative." That's a fancy-ass analyst way of saying that iPhone owners are dumbly loyal and will basically buy whatever Apple makes. You know us too well.

Verizon finalizes Yahoo acquisition, instantly starts laying people off Posted: 08 Jun 2017 11:34 AM PDT In a vote today, Yahoo's stockholders formally approved the sale of sad former internet company Yahoo to telecoms giant Verizon. The sale values Yahoo at about $4.5 billion, a price that was reduced by hundreds of millions in February, after details of a major Yahoo security breach leaked. As the vote took place today, details also leaked out about staff reductions that Verizon is imposing on its new acquisition. Around 2,100 positions are reportedly being cut across Yahoo and AOL, the current Verizon subsidiary that Yahoo is being merged with.
Verizon's post-acquisition plan for Yahoo is to merge it with AOL, which these days is mostly a media company. The combined monstrosity will be called "Oath," presumably because Verizon has realized that neither AOL nor Yahoo are particularly well-regarded brands these days. Oath may be an attempt to imply security and reliability, something that Yahoo is not known for after hundreds of millions of customer accounts were hacked. The job losses account for around 15% of Yahoo and AOL's workforce, and will reportedly be applied across the globe. Some of those positions will be duplicate roles in finance, HR, and other admin departments, but cuts to editorial and product teams are also possible. In unrelated news, Yahoo also voted today to approve the final compensation for its executive team. Marissa Mayer, Yahoo's outgoing CEO, stands to make $186 million from the sale. During her five-year tenure as CEO, she made a number of dubious moves, like a $1.1-billion acquisition of Tumblr and paying a teenager $30 million for an app with no underlying technology or code. |

NYC subway riders will get their dogs on board no matter what anyone says Posted: 07 Jun 2017 10:42 AM PDT A new NYC transit rule went into effect last October, which bans dogs from riding the subway — unless they fit inside a "container." Tesla releases Model Y teaser photo and sheds light on upcoming semi truck Posted: 07 Jun 2017 01:31 PM PDT Tesla currently has all hands on deck as it prepares to begin mass production on the Model 3, but Elon Musk and co. certainly aren't resting on their laurels. On the contrary, Tesla is planning to introduce a number of new vehicles in the coming years, including a revamped Roadster and a pickup truck. Also on the docket is a crossover version of the Model 3 dubbed the Model Y. Elon Musk initially confirmed that the Model Y was in the works about two years ago, even hinting that it may feature the same type of falcon wing doors Tesla originally introduced with the Model X. Notably, though, the Model Y will likely be based on a different platform than the Model 3.
Yesterday, Tesla held its annual shareholders meeting in California and took the time to disclose some new information on a few upcoming Tesla initiatives. Of particular interest, though, was the first official teaser we've seen of the Model Y, an image which you can view below. It's hard to take too much away from the photo, but it's still a lot sleeker than some of the previous concepts we've seen floating around the web. During the shareholder meeting, Musk stated that the Model Y may prove to be even more popular than the Model 3. That's quite a prediction given that Model 3 reservations are believed to be in the 400,000 range. At this point, it remains unclear when Tesla plans to introduce the Model Y. Indeed, the next car likely to come off of Tesla's production line --after the Model 3 -- is a Tesla semi-truck. With respect to Tesla's upcoming semi-truck, Musk yesterday (via Electrek) said that it will feature the "highest weight capability with long-range" and that we can expect to see a working prototype before 2018. "We have shown it to a number of people who buy heavy duty trucking and they all love it," Musk said. "They just want to know how many can they buy and how soon. The biggest customers of the heavy duty Tesla Semi are helping ensure that it is specified to their needs. It's not a mystery. they already know that it is going to meet their needs because they told us what those needs are." About two months ago, Musk said that Tesla's semi-truck "team has done an amazing job" while adding that the design is "seriously next level." Additionally, Tesla a few weeks back rolled out the following teaser image of its forthcoming semi-truck. http://media.zenfs.com/en_US/News/BGR_News/tesla-semi-truck.jpg?quality=98&strip=all&strip=all |

Coalition strikes 'kill 17 civilians' as battle for Raqa rages Posted: 08 Jun 2017 05:09 PM PDT An international coalition pounded Raqa with air strikes Thursday, with a monitor saying at least 17 civilians had been killed in the bombardment as US-backed fighters pushed further into the Islamic State group's Syrian bastion. The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said US-led coalition forces had hit the city and its suburbs with at least 25 strikes, warning that dozens had been injured and the death toll could rise. The air strikes came after US-backed fighters with the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) battled deeper into Raqa, two days after finally entering following a months-long struggle to surround a city that has become synonymous with IS atrocities since its capture by the jihadists in 2014. |
