As Senate hearings heat up, Warner calls FBI nomination ‘an effort to distract’ the public Posted: 07 Jun 2017 08:41 AM PDT Warner made the comments on CBS' "This Morning" after Trump tweeted that he would be nominating former Assistant Attorney General Christopher Wray to replace James Comey as head of the bureau. The Virginia Democrat is the top Democrat on the committee that is hearing testimony from National Intelligence Director Dan Coats and National Security Agency Director Mike Rogers Wednesday, and ousted FBI Director James Comey Thursday. |
Ancient Aztec temple, ball court found in Mexico City Posted: 07 Jun 2017 04:52 PM PDT A giant temple to the Aztec god of the wind and a court where the Aztecs played a deadly ball game have been discovered in the heart of Mexico City. Archaeologists unveiled the rare finds Wednesday after extensive excavations, giving journalists a tour of the semi-circular temple of Ehecatl-Quetzalcoatl and nearby ball court. Records indicate that Spanish conquistador Hernan Cortes first watched the ritual Aztec ball game at the court in 1528, invited by the last Aztec emperor, Montezuma -- the man whose empire he went on to conquer. |

Deadly military transport plane crash in Myanmar Posted: 08 Jun 2017 05:07 AM PDT A navy ship found bodies and aircraft parts in the seas off Myanmar while searching Thursday morning for a military transport plane carrying 120 people, a spokesman said. Nine naval ships, five army aircraft and three helicopters were searching for the plane Thursday morning, a military spokesman said. Gen. Myat Min Oo said the ship found two life jackets, three bodies and a tire that was part of an aircraft wheel. |
Finance giants step in to Hong Kong gay court battle Posted: 07 Jun 2017 03:32 AM PDT Major international finance institutions in Hong Kong made a landmark intervention Wednesday in the case of a gay couple struggling to get their rights recognised by the city's courts. The 12 businesses -- including Morgan Stanley, Goldman Sachs and Credit Suisse -- say they want to submit evidence to a hearing at the Court of Appeal next week in the case of a British woman refused a spousal visa because she is in a same-sex partnership. Law firm Davis Polk and Wardwell, representing the companies, said their clients had intervened "to assist the court by giving a more rounded picture of the issues". |

India opposition leader Gandhi arrested amid farmers protest Posted: 08 Jun 2017 07:01 AM PDT Indian police on Thursday briefly arrested leading opposition figure Rahul Gandhi as he tried to reach farmers striking in Madhya Pradesh, where five protesters were earlier killed in clashes. The 46-year-old Congress party leader was detained as he crossed into the volatile region in central India by bike, having ditched his car to avoid detection by local authorities who denied him permission to visit. Gandhi, the scion to the Nehru-Gandhi dynasty that ruled India through its Congress Party for decades, almost reached the epicentre of farmer riots that have roiled the area in recent days, but was stopped and held by police. |

Posted: 06 Jun 2017 04:22 PM PDT Imagine taking an evening dive and seeing a fish casually strolling along the ocean floor ... on what looks like a pair of legs. That's exactly what happened to a French diver off the coast of Bali, Indonesia on a recent night expedition. Luckily, he filmed the encounter so scientists (and the internet) could enjoy. SEE ALSO: Beachgoers should be wary of this deadly sea creature The diver, Emeric Benhalassa, said he suspected the creature was a type of stingfish (one of the world's most venomous fish), National Geographic reports. However, scientists have not been so sure, and have been unable to reach a consensus about what the bizarre creature actually is since Benhalassa's video surfaced on Monday. The footage shows an orange-ish colored fish with billowy brown fins and what appear to be spiny legs scuttling around the ocean floor. While stingfish don't actually have legs, they do have "pectoral filaments" (a part of their pectoral fins which separated through evolution), which they use to root around for crustaceans and worms. Yum. According to National Geographic, possible scientific identifications of the fish have included a striped stingfish, a painted stinger, a whitetail goblinfish, or even an undescribed species. A blue-eyed stingfishImage: Colin Marshall/REX/ShutterstockWithout being able to hold the fish in their hands, scientists say it's hard to make an exact identification. It doesn't help that very little is known about the behavior of the stingfish, because they spend their days buried in the mud. Stingfish are viewed as a delicacy in Japan and make expensive menu items, while in parts of Southeast Asia they are tossed back into the ocean because they are believed to be devils. One thing's for sure- there's definitely some weird stuff in the ocean. WATCH: Stay among the coral reefs in this unique underwater hotel room |

It took less than a day for bloggers to convince themselves WWDC was a disaster Posted: 06 Jun 2017 02:31 PM PDT During Apple's WWDC keynote yesterday, Tim Cook and a slew of Apple executives introduced a number of new software and hardware initiatives, including a peer-to-peer payment feature via Apple Pay, a brand new iMac Pro, a sleek new 10.5-inch iPad, refreshed notebooks across the board, a brand new augmented reality platform, and a premium-oriented home speaker dubbed HomePod, just to name a few. All in all, Apple's WWDC event this year was solid from start to finish, though perhaps not the most exciting WWDC event we've ever seen. Nonetheless, Apple introduced enough new software and hardware to get developers and iOS users alike excited for the future of Apple's ecosystem. Indeed, the augmented reality demo was particularly enthralling. Predictably, though, it didn't take long for critics and naysayers to start chirping about how Apple has lost its luster, with some even trotting out the same old tired lines about how Tim Cook isn't the visionary that Steve Jobs was.
An example: try and digest this blurb from Christopher Versace over at Forbes.
This is a curious take because Tim Cook was never supposed to be the second coming of Steve Jobs. Yes, he's an operations guy, but he's still the man who Jobs tapped to take Apple to new heights. And sure, Cook may not be as dynamic as Jobs, and he may not be the visionary that Jobs was, but there's no denying that Apple has absolutely thrived with him steering the ship. It's almost comical that some critics, in the same breath that they praise all things Steve Jobs, bemoan Jobs' choice of successor. Further, Tim Cook may not be Steve Jobs, but no one is Steve Jobs. Jobs was an incredibly unique individual who possessed the rare skill of being able to anticipate how the tech landscape was going to unfold. To expect Cook, or any one for that matter, to live up to Jobs' standard is absurd. Indeed, one of the key pieces of advice that Jobs told Cook was that he shouldn't fall prey to "What would Steve Jobs do?" syndrome. As to the WWDC announcements themselves, they were admittedly incremental in some regards, but that's how Apple actually operates more often than not. It doesn't roll out wild new ideas on a consistent basis. On the contrary, it refines and polishes its existing hardware and software lines, continually offering users more bang for their buck. Versace himself concedes this point:
And yet, the urge to criticize all things Apple is so great that even the iOS 11 name itself can't escape derision. The crazy thing is that Apple's WWDC event, in the eyes of some, is already being viewed as a failure. This is mind-boggling given that such critiques aren't even giving Apple's new software and hardware an opportunity to hit the marketplace. |

Inside an ISIS prison in Mosul Posted: 07 Jun 2017 09:24 AM PDT Islamic State built prison cells inside an ordinary villa in Mosul as part of the group's tactic of boosting the safety of its jails and security centers by concealing them among regular houses. Despite their outward appearance, the jails had the regular attributes of state-run detention centers where inmates have their documents and belongings taken away when they arrive, to be given back to them if and when they are released. "This is to keep the prisoners subdued," said the Iraqi military intelligence officer showing the villa to journalists. |
Scientists Have Found the Oldest Known Human Fossils Posted: 07 Jun 2017 10:00 AM PDT Hundreds of thousands of years ago, around 62 miles west of what would eventually become Marrakesh, a group of people lived in a cave overlooking a lush Moroccan landscape. They rested there, building fires to keep themselves warm. They hunted there, sharpening stone tools to bring down animals. And they died there, leaving their bones behind in the dirt. At the time, there would have been nothing particularly notable about these cave-dwellers. They were yet more Homo sapiens, members of a nascent ape species that had spread across Africa. But in their death, they have become singularly important. |
Comey's bombshell recollections of Trump talks Posted: 07 Jun 2017 02:20 PM PDT Former FBI director James Comey gave damaging details Wednesday of a series of nine meetings or conversations he had with President Donald Trump before being sacked last month. Comey, who had been leading an investigation into alleged Russian meddling in last year's US election, confirmed reports that Trump urged him to drop an investigation into former White House national security advisor Michael Flynn. Flynn, who quit after less than a month in his post after admitting misleading Vice President Mike Pence, was under scrutiny over his contacts with Russian officials when Comey and Trump met in the White House on February 14. |

Maine's most mysterious catch Posted: 07 Jun 2017 12:01 PM PDT At 1 a.m., Julie Keene tucked her red hair under a baseball cap, pulled waders over her cammies, and invaded the Union River to see if she had caught elvers. Adam Boutin, her partner of 23 years and a fellow fisherman, loped easily over the rocks and got to the net first. Keene is a veteran elver fisher, one of only 425 Mainers, aside from native tribes, who can legally harvest the mysterious juvenile eels. |

Watergate pales in comparison to Trump scandals: Clapper Posted: 06 Jun 2017 10:31 PM PDT Watergate pales in comparison to the scandals engulfing Donald Trump and the Russia connection, former top US intelligence official James Clapper said Wednesday ahead of a key Senate hearing in Washington. Clapper, who has worked in intelligence under every US leader from John F. Kennedy to Barack Obama, said his professional instincts had always been loyalty to the president, regardless of which party they come from. "Now as a private citizen, I am very concerned about the assault on our institutions coming from both an external source -- read Russia -- and an internal source, the president himself," he said in Australia. |

Politicians backing Islamist militants in Philippines: army Posted: 08 Jun 2017 01:25 AM PDT One local politician has been arrested and others are wanted for supporting Islamist militants who have taken over parts of a southern Philippine city, authorities said Thursday. Nearly 200 people have been reported killed since militants flying black flags of the Islamic State group went on a rampage in Marawi, the main Muslim city in the predominantly Catholic Philippines, on May 23. While much of the focus has been on the hundreds of gunmen reportedly involved, authorities said Thursday that they had been receiving support from local politicians and residents. |
London attackers were chef, clerk and 'suspicious' Italian Posted: 06 Jun 2017 05:16 PM PDT LONDON (AP) — Details emerged Tuesday of the three London Bridge attackers: a Pakistan-born failed customer service clerk with links to one of Europe's most prolific hate preachers, a Moroccan pastry chef whose partner said he once went swimming rather than see his daughter and an Italian man who told authorities he "wanted to be a terrorist." |
