Feinstein: Trump ‘in for a rude awakening’ if he tries to shut down Russia probe Posted: 16 Jun 2017 10:33 AM PDT Sen. Dianne Feinstein, D-Calif., unleashed a blistering message in response to President Trump's early morning Twitter tirade in which he both dismissed the Russia probe as a "witch hunt" and appeared to confirm he was being investigated as part of that inquiry. Feinstein raised the possibility that Trump would try to dismiss Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein and Robert Mueller, the special counsel Rosenstein appointed to oversee the investigation into whether the Trump campaign colluded with Russia to influence the 2016 presidential election. |

US officer acquitted over shooting of black motorist Posted: 16 Jun 2017 04:07 PM PDT A Minnesota police officer was acquitted Friday in the shooting of a black motorist whose dying moments were captured on Facebook video in a case that shocked the nation. Jeronimo Yanez, 29, was found not guilty of all three charges he faced in the death of 32-year-old Philando Castile: second-degree manslaughter and two felony counts of intentional discharge of a dangerous weapon for endangering the safety of Castile's girlfriend, Diamond Reynolds, and her four-year-old daughter. Both were in the car when the officer shot Castile during a traffic stop on July 6 of last year. |

Deadlocked Cosby jury asks about 'reasonable doubt' Posted: 16 Jun 2017 07:55 PM PDT The deadlocked US jury battling to reach a verdict in Bill Cosby's sexual assault trial asked the judge Friday to define "reasonable doubt" and again asked to hear from the fallen star's testimony. The 79-year-old pioneering black actor could face spending the rest of his life in prison if convicted on three counts of aggravated indecent assault against 44-year-old Andrea Constand at his Philadelphia mansion in January 2004. The 12-member jury had told Judge Steven O'Neill on Thursday that they were deadlocked, but the Pennsylvania judge ordered them to continue with no cut-off point to stop trying to reach a unanimous agreement. |

Mormon girl, 12, is stopped from speaking as she explains why she is gay to church Posted: 18 Jun 2017 04:34 AM PDT A 12-year-old girl who came out as a lesbian in front of her Mormon church congregation in Utah was told to sit down halfway through a speech in which she said she was not a "horrible sinner". Speaking at the church's monthly Fast and Testimony session, the girl, Savannah, said she was a child of "heavenly parents" who had "made me to be gay", according to a video taken by someone in the audience which has been watched by more than 200,000 people. A man then addressed the congregation, using the same mic, telling them he was grateful that the "Heavenly Father has made us all unique". |

Iraqi forces launch assault on Mosul Old City Posted: 18 Jun 2017 07:40 AM PDT Iraqi forces launched an assault Sunday to retake Mosul's Old City, the last district still held by the Islamic State group three years after the jihadists seized the northern city and declared their "caliphate". Military commanders told AFP the assault had begun at dawn after overnight air strikes by the US-led coalition backing Iraqi forces. The push into Mosul's Old City -- a densely populated warren of narrow alleyways on the western side of Iraq's second city -- marks the culmination of a months-long campaign by Iraqi forces to retake IS's last major urban stronghold in the country. |
Driven to distraction: Pyongyang's 'traffic ladies' Posted: 16 Jun 2017 12:53 PM PDT Snapping their heads from side to side, marching into the roads in close-fitting blue uniforms and black heels, the "traffic ladies" who marshal vehicles at the intersections of Pyongyang are an emblematic image of the North Korean capital. Officially known as traffic security officers but universally referred to as traffic ladies, they are chosen for their looks in a society that remains traditionalist in many respects. The 300-odd ladies are unique to Pyongyang, which North Korean authorities are always keen to present in the best possible light despite their nuclear-armed country's impoverished status, and ensure a steady supply of photogenic young women who are the favourite subject of visiting tourists and journalists. |

Tesla mechanics rescue a cute kitten that got stuck inside a Model X bumper Posted: 17 Jun 2017 01:52 PM PDT Of all the things that could possibly go wrong with your electric self-driving car, finding a kitten inside your bumper may be the cutest of them all. An unnamed Model X owner uploaded two clips to YouTube on Saturday that show a teeny kitten trapped inside the bumper of his vehicle. "So this morning, I heard a meow in my garage," the man said in the clip. "And we don't have a cat." After narrowing down the meows to his vehicle, then the rear bumper, the man decided to bring his car into a Tesla service center to get a little help rescuing the cat safely. The Arabic phrase "Allahu Akbar" ('God is greatest') resonated through the crowded Ibn-Rushd-Goethe-Mosque Friday as US-Malaysian Ani Zonneveld, one of the world's few female imams, launched the call to prayer. Then one of the founders of the new place of worship, lawyer and women's rights activist Seyran Ates, opened the event with words of welcome before Christian and Jewish guests and a large media contingent. |

"The army, counter-terrorism forces and federal police launched an attack on the Old City," Staff Lieutenant General Abdulamir Yarallah said in a statement. Michelle Carter broke down in tears and sobbed into a tissue during the 20-minute juvenile court hearing in Massachusetts, which is likely to break new ground in a state that has no law against encouraging someone to commit suicide. Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu late Friday held talks with Saudi King Salman in Mecca aimed at easing the crisis over the diplomatic and economic isolation of Ankara's ally Qatar. Correspondent Hasan Abdullah and cameraman Nihat Yayman, who were covering the talks, were detained by Saudi authorities at their hotel but then released after Cavusoglu personally intervened with the Saudi king, the Hurriyet daily said. |

Science Leader No More? China Challenges US Dominance Posted: 17 Jun 2017 05:50 AM PDT The United States still leads the world in scientific research, at least in publishing the most biomedical studies in top-tier journals and spending the most money on research and development (R&D). America's dominance in the scientific world is slowly shrinking, the researchers found, largely because China has invested vast amounts of money in science over the past two decades. In 2015, China's biomedical research teams ranked No. 4 on the top 10 list for the total number of new discoveries published in six top-tier journals, the researchers said. |
