Gun control efforts stalled in Orlando following largest mass shooting in US history Posted: 11 Jun 2017 03:10 PM PDT A year after 49 party-goers were gunned down by a man with a assault-style rifle at the Pulse Nightclub in Orlando – the worst mass shooting in modern US history – Democrats in Florida say just about every attempt to pass gun control legislation in the wake of the massacre has been blocked. "These types of weapons are the gold standard of mass murders," said State Representative Carlos Guillermo-Smith, who sponsored an assault weapons ban in tandem with a state senator. Mateen, who had previously been investigated by the FBI on two occasions, walked into a gun store and bought a Sig Sauer MCX just nine days before the killings.

Suspected N.Korea drone filmed missile defence site: Seoul Posted: 13 Jun 2017 01:15 AM PDT South Korea said Tuesday a drone believed sent from North Korea had been spying on a US missile defence system before it crashed. The remains of the small drone, which was equipped with a camera, were retrieved by the South's military last week from a hillside where it had crash-landed close to the heavily-fortified inter-Korean border. The military analysed the contents of the camera's 64-gigabyte memory chip and said it had been spying on the missile defence system known as the Terminal High Altitude Area Defense (THAAD).

Fisker’s Tesla competitor has 400 mile range and charges in just 9 minutes Posted: 12 Jun 2017 01:37 PM PDT Henrik Fisker is a bit of a legend in the automotive design world, so when he announced that he was working on an all-new electric vehicle that would both challenge Tesla's Model S, and serve as the spiritual successor to the Fisker Karma, there was plenty of interest. Fisker first teased the new car in late 2016, but now we have our first real look at the vehicle and it sure is fancy. https://twitter.com/FiskerOfficial/status/873584846324379648 The car, called the Fisker EMotion, will be the first vehicle under the newly formed Fisker Inc. — Fisker sold his Fisker Automotive brand in early 2014, and it was subsequently renamed Karma Automotive — and is one of two planned electric cars from the company, with the second unnamed vehicle being designed for mass market appeal rather than the luxury sector like the EMotion. The EMotion is definitely a sleek, beautiful car, but what should really get electric car buffs excited is the technology that is packed into it. Fisker says the vehicle is designed with a 400-mile range in mind — beating the sub-350-mile range of the Tesla Model S handily — as well as a fast-charging feature that will allow it to juice up in just nine minutes. That's incredibly fast, but Fisker says the car relies on patent-pending battery technology designed by researchers at UCLA, and abandons the typical lithium-ion battery trend in favor of supercapacitors using graphene. The car has a top speed of 161 miles per hour, and will be capable of driving autonomously, though its self-driving capabilities may not be activated until after its retail launch. Pricing and other minor details are still unclear.

Puerto Ricans back full US statehood but vote marred by abstentions Posted: 11 Jun 2017 03:05 PM PDT Puerto Rico's referendum on statehood delivered a lackluster turnout Sunday, with almost four fifths of voters deciding not to cast a ballot, though those who did unanimously backed the territory becoming a US state. A weak turnout had been predicted, given the call by opposition parties -- which supported the status quo -- for a boycott of the non-binding vote. Despite the low level of participation, Puerto Rican Governor Ricardo Rossello vowed, after casting his vote for full annexation by the United States, to defend internationally the result.

Republicans Are Hiding Health Care Plan Because They're 'So Ashamed,' Schumer Says Posted: 12 Jun 2017 03:09 PM PDT WASHINGTON ― Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) has a pretty good idea why Senate Republican leaders are withholding the details of their health care repeal bill from the public ― because "they are so ashamed," Schumer said on Monday. After more than a half-dozen Senate Republicans declared they would never pass the measure the House passed earlier this year to repeal the Affordable Care Act, otherwise known as Obamacare, legislators in the upper chamber have been working behind closed doors to come up with their own bill in hopes of finding the minimum 50 votes they need.

Tracking invasive species? Follow the people Posted: 12 Jun 2017 10:48 AM PDT Islands and populated coastal areas are the world's "hotspots" for invasive species, which can upend entire ecosystems and drive local animals and plants to extinction, a study reported Monday. The first global census of non-native fauna and flora found the highest concentrations in Hawaii, New Zealand's North Island, and the Lesser Sunda Islands of Indonesia. The 50th US state is beset with alien species -- including rats, feral pigs, and the firetree, which crowds out indigenous plants -- in each of eight categories that include reptiles, fish, ants, spiders, mammals and amphibians.

More details emerge about the intel Trump leaked to the Russians Posted: 12 Jun 2017 08:08 PM PDT
Remember when Donald Trump leaked security information to the Russians that was so secret that only a few people have access to it? In the aftermath of that scandal, we learned that the intel Trump gave to the Russians was obtained by an allied country, likely Israel, and was related to ISIS' plans to disguise bombs as laptop and tablet batteries. A brand new report reveals more details about that intelligence operation, as well as other cyber attacks on the radical group. In a report detailing the America's current digital attacks meant to hinder ISIS activities, The New York Times explains that US cyber forces have not been able to score the same hacking victories against ISIS that they enjoyed against Iran and North Korea in the past. That's because ISIS groups use ordinary devices and resources, and they can quickly recover after cyber hits. Furthermore, The Times says that one of the rare successes against ISIS belongs in part to Israel. Top Israeli hackers penetrated a small cell of bombmakers in Syria a few months ago, and that's how the US found out that ISIS was working on placing bombs inside laptop computers. "The intelligence was so exquisite that it enabled the United States to understand how the weapons could be detonated, according to two American officials familiar with the operation," the report notes. Soon after that, the laptop ban was announced. And then, the leaker in chief told the Russians -- and the whole world including ISIS -- that the US knows this particular secret. Trump's "disclosure infuriated Israeli officials," The Times says. The report explaining in more details the current hacking efforts against ISIS is available at this link.

California Prepares for Solar Power Loss During the Great Eclipse Posted: 12 Jun 2017 08:30 AM PDT A total solar eclipse that will sweep across the United States on Aug. 21 is expected to make a noticeable dent in solar-energy collection, prompting energy workers to concoct workarounds that will help them meet energy demands while the eclipse passes overhead. Utility workers already have a game plan in California, where 9 percent of electricity came from utility-scale solar plants in 2016. During the eclipse, when the sun disappears behind the moon, power grid workers plan to ramp up energy output from other sources, including from hydroelectricity and natural gas, and then quickly reintroduce solar power as the sun reappears. In all, California's residents shouldn't notice a difference in their power supply during the duration of the eclipse, said Steven Greenlee, a spokesman for California Independent System Operator (ISO), a nonprofit that manages California's power grid.

Video: Richard Hammond miraculously survives a harrowing accident involving a $1 million supercar Posted: 11 Jun 2017 11:00 AM PDT
In a harrowing incident that thankfully resulted in no fatalities, former Top Gear host Richard Hammond recently lost control of a $1 million Rimac Concept One supercar and crashed into a house while driving in Switzerland. Hammond was driving the car for a segment that was set to air on The Grand Tour, a car-enthusiast show on Amazon Video. Jeremy Clarkson, a co-host on the show who you might also recognize from Top Gear, took to Twitter this weekend and said that the incident was the "biggest crash I've ever seen and the most frightening." Incredibly, Hammond didn't appear to suffer any serious injuries during the accident, save for a fractured knee, though he was swiftly taken to a nearby hospital for observation. Even more incredible is the fact that Hammond managed to climb out of the car wreckage on his own accord. Ultimately, the pricey Rimac Concept One burst into flames. A spokesperson for the show issued the following statement in the wake of the crash. Richard Hammond was involved in a serious crash after completing the Hemburg Hill Climb in Switzerland in a Rimac Concept One, an electric super car built in Croatia, during filming for The Grand Tour Season 2 on Amazon Prime, but very fortunately suffered no serious injury. The Grand Tour Twitter account posted two photos of the aftermath. Video of the crash was even posted to YouTube yesterday afternoon. As evidenced below, the crash could have easily been much worse. Incidentally, the root cause of the accident remains unknown at the moment. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kCwBBaZ7UAE

True hero sneaks grandma's dog into hospital by disguising it as a baby Posted: 13 Jun 2017 08:43 AM PDT A good granddaughter has to do what she has to do, even if that means breaking a hospital's 'no pets' rule. SEE ALSO: Carry your kitty in this adorable kangaroo pouch hoodie A 21-year-old veterinarian technician's grandma was laid up in a hospital and really wanted to see her dog, despite the facility's reluctance to let puppers roam the halls. And so, the diligent granddaughter, Twitter's HennickShelby, determined that the best way to sneak a cute doggo into her grandmother's hospital room is to disguise it as a baby. And so that's just what she did. She wrapped the canine up like a sleeping babe, put it on her shoulder, and snuck it right into her grateful grandma. That was the first super smart thing she did. The second super smart thing she did was share the feat on Twitter so that we could all see. My grandma is in the hospital right now and wanted to see her dog. So I made it look like I was carrying a baby and we made it ❤ pic.twitter.com/oKxNBlJEEL — Shelbae (@HennickShelby) June 11, 2017 Kudos to this dog, who clearly kept its cool on the elevator ride up. Le Pen's far-right surge loses momentum in France Posted: 11 Jun 2017 02:46 PM PDT Marine Le Pen's far-right National Front suffered a severe setback on Sunday, as her success in reaching the French presidential runoff failed to translate into support in parliamentary polls. Le Pen won 10.7 million votes as she lost to Emmanuel Macron last month, but her party's first-round result on Sunday saw it falling way short of its aim of getting a stronger voice in parliament. The anti-EU, anti-immigration National Front (FN) is on course to win between one and 10 seats in the 577-seat National Assembly in the June 18 runoff.

Pope gives rebel Nigeria priests ultimatum over bishop Posted: 12 Jun 2017 06:41 AM PDT Pope Francis has given church officials in southern Nigeria a 30-day ultimatum to obey him by accepting the nomination of a bishop -- or face being suspended from office. During talks with a Catholic delegation from Nigeria, the pope demanded that priests and church members in the southern diocese of Ahiara write to him personally to "ask his forgiveness", the Holy See said in a statement at the weekend. "Whoever does not do this will be ipso facto suspended a divinis and will lose his current office," it warned.
