Bitter Ga. loss provides backdrop for Democrats to reflect on party’s future Posted: 21 Jun 2017 09:22 AM PDT In the wake of Jon Ossoff's stinging defeat in the House race in Atlanta's suburbs last night, the question now is: How do Democrats pick up the pieces? Under this scenario, Democrats would embrace candidates who excoriate the wealthiest "1 percent" and promise to curb income inequality, zero out public college and university tuition and enact single-payer universal health care. There are also Democratic warnings that Ossoff's tepid handling of President Trump misfired. |

UN chief concerned about possible escalation in Syria Posted: 20 Jun 2017 11:12 AM PDT UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres warned Tuesday that the recent downings of a Syrian jet and of an Iranian-made drone could be "very dangerous" and lead to an escalation of the war in Syria. Guterres also sought to downplay expectations of a breakthrough in the next round of UN-led peace talks on Syria starting on July 10. "Indeed I am concerned and I hope that this will not lead to any escalation of the conflict that is already as dramatic as it is," Guterres told a news conference at UN headquarters. |

OAS nations make last-ditch effort to condemn Venezuela for crisis Posted: 21 Jun 2017 02:49 PM PDT By Anthony Esposito CANCUN, Mexico (Reuters) - Mexico and the United States pushed on Wednesday to condemn Venezuela's government for its handling of the political and economic crisis in the South American country, on the final day of a meeting of the Organization of American States, sources told Reuters. Foreign ministers from the 34-nation OAS bloc failed on Monday to agree on a resolution formally rebuking Venezuela, where at least 75 people have been killed in more than two months of protests. Now a group of nations, led by the United States, Mexico and regional allies, may try to include a declaration on Venezuela, tucking it into a more general resolution on human rights, according to two officials close to the closed-door talks. |

Encinas said the gunmen had planted improvised bombs around the school, a small building in a rural area, and that soldiers had surrounded it. The unrest occurred in Pigkawayan, a farming town about 160 kilometres (100 miles) from Marawi city where fighters linked to the Islamic State (IS) group have been battling troops for a month in a conflict that has claimed hundreds of lives. |

Pentagon chief blasts N.Korea over US student who died Posted: 21 Jun 2017 01:21 PM PDT North Korea's treatment of an American student who died after being released from detention in a coma was inhuman and US patience with Pyongyang is running out, Pentagon chief Jim Mattis said Wednesday. Otto Warmbier, 22, suffered severe brain damage in North Korea and died on Monday following 18 months of captivity in North Korea after he was sentenced to hard labor for stealing a political poster from a hotel. "To see a young man go over there healthy and, (after) a minor act of mischief, come home dead basically... this goes beyond any kind of understanding of law and order, of humanity, of responsibility towards any human being," Mattis said. |

Can you spot the Curiosity rover in this photo of Mars? Posted: 21 Jun 2017 08:04 PM PDT NASA's Curiosity rover has delivered some seriously stellar views of Mars to us back on Earth, but it's easy to forget that the dusty, durable vehicle spends a lot of its time driving to various locations of scientific importance. Crawling over rocks and navigating never-before-seen peaks and valleys, the trusty bot just keeps on truckin'. This week, NASA delivered a photo that perfectly encapsulates Curiosity's tiresome journey, but you might miss the rover at first glance.
The photo, taken by NASA's Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter, captures the Curiosity rover as it trudges over a seemingly endless sea of rocky, lifeless terrain. The image, which has been color-enhanced so that you actually have a chance of picking out the rover hidden among the weathered rocks and sand. Can you see it? It's a bit hard to make out, but that tiny blue dot in the very center is Curiosity, clawing along on the martian landscape on its way to a new destination. In the photo, the vehicle is headed uphill on Mount Sharp, towards Vera Rubin Ridge, where Curiosity investigated rock formations. It's kind of crazy to think that this very thing — scraping its wheels on dusty rocks, taking samples, and snapping photos — is what the rover has been doing every day for the past five years or so. And with its plutonium power supply rated to last a minimum of 14 years (albeit with a decrease in overall output), it could be doing it for the better part of another decade, if things work out well. |
Donald Trump wins standing ovation at rally for proposing immigration law that already exists Posted: 22 Jun 2017 07:40 AM PDT Donald Trump received a standing ovation when he announced plans to introduce legislation to stop immigrants receiving welfare benefits for five years - even though such a law has already existed for two decades. Speaking to supporters at a campaign-style rally in Iowa, his fifth such event since he was elected, the President said he wanted to do more to help rural America. It said legislation backed Bill Clinton, called the Personal Responsibility and Work Opportunity Reconciliation Act of 1996, stated that immigrants were "not eligible for any federal means-tested public benefit" for five years beginning when they came into the country. |
