CIA names former bin Laden hunt chief to run Iran spying: report Posted: 02 Jun 2017 07:33 AM PDT The CIA has named the hardline chief of its hunt for Osama bin Laden and head of its lethal drone program to lead Iran operations, the New York Times reported Friday. The choice of Michael D'Andrea to run the Central Intelligence Agency's spying on Iran is the newest sign of the Trump administration's turn to tougher stance against the Islamic Republic, the Times said, quoting intelligence community sources. Although officially under cover and not acknowledged by the CIA, D'Andrea, a convert to Islam who is around 60 years old, has been a key figure in the fight against Islamic extremists groups. |
Just a 100 miles from the White House, Tangier Island is disappearing into the sea Posted: 02 Jun 2017 12:41 PM PDT On Virginia's Tangier Island, about 100 miles and a ferry ride from Washington, the waters of the Chesapeake Bay are edging dangerously close to William Eskridge's house. The island is under threat from rapid erosion that is being accelerated by rising water scientists believe to be caused by climate change. Tangier Island is wedged between the eastern shore of Maryland and the Virginia coast. |
General leading Philippine battle with Islamists relieved of command Posted: 02 Jun 2017 05:04 AM PDT By Tom Allard MARAWI CITY, Philippines (Reuters) - The general leading an offensive against pro-Islamic State militants holed up in a southern Philippine town has been relieved of his command, an army spokesman said on Friday, the 11th day of the country's biggest security crisis in years. The removal of Brigadier-General Nixon Fortes as commander of the army brigade in Marawi City and his replacement by his deputy, Colonel Generoso Ponio, was not related to the battle that has raged in the city, the spokesman said. "That's not the reason," spokesman Lieutenant-Colonel Ray Tiongson said when asked if Fortes' replacement was triggered by the course of the conflict. |

Isolated US lashes out at climate critics Posted: 02 Jun 2017 06:37 PM PDT The White House hit back Friday at criticism of Donald Trump's decision to scrap a major global climate deal, accusing Europe of trying to "shackle" the US economy and refusing to acknowledge climate change is real. With the United States virtually isolated on the world stage, a string of administration officials went on the offensive Friday to justify the Republican president's decision to abandon the 195-nation Paris deal curbing global emissions. Trump's top climate advisor Scott Pruitt was indignant: "The world applauded when we joined Paris. |

Taliban warns against retaliation over Kabul attack Posted: 01 Jun 2017 10:47 AM PDT By Sayed Hassib and Samar Zwak KABUL (Reuters) - The Taliban warned the Afghan government on Thursday against harming any of their prisoners after reports that President Ashraf Ghani would order the execution of 11 militants on death row in revenge for the devastating truck bomb attack in Kabul. Ghani's fragile and divided government has come under increasing pressure over its failure to provide security following a series of high-profile attacks that have killed hundreds of soldiers and civilians so far this year. One of the worst such attacks since the U.S.-led campaign to oust the Taliban in 2001, it was only the latest in a grim series that has killed thousands of civilians over the years. |

93-year-old bride gets the internet to help her pick her wedding outfit Posted: 02 Jun 2017 12:11 AM PDT It's never too late for love. But when it comes to the wedding, you only have one shot at getting your outfit right. For 93-year-old Sylvia Martin from Canberra, Australia she's left it in the hands of the internet to decide what she'll wear when she gets hitched to her long-time friend Frank Raymond next month, as reported by the Canberra Times. SEE ALSO: Bride bucks bridal shower norms for a party with her male friends The clothing store Martin and her bridesmaids visited for her wedding dress, Birdsnest, posted a photo with four different options on Facebook Sunday. Suffice it to say, she's really into the red. According to the post, Martin and Raymond have been living in a retirement home together and have known each other for more than 20 years. Raymond has asked Martin to marry him "many times," but always refused because it would be disrespectful to her deceased husband. But an illness a year ago changed things, the pair moved in together where Raymond asked her to marry him again. This time, she said yes. "The response to our Facebook post has just been incredible," Penny Carroll, the marketing manager at Birdsnest, told the newspaper. "It's such a beautiful and happy story." Airlines body says laptop ban affecting Middle East-U.S. traffic Posted: 01 Jun 2017 10:05 AM PDT Restrictions on bringing large electronic devices into aircraft cabins on certain routes to the United States are affecting traffic between the Middle East and the United States, a global airlines' association said on Thursday. Overall demand for air travel rose 10.7 percent in April, but the growth rate for the Middle East airlines was slower than its five-year average, a trend not seen in other regions, the International Air Transport Association said on Thursday. In March, the United States announced restrictions on large electronic items, such as laptops, on flights originating from 10 airports, including in the United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia, Qatar and Turkey, because of fears that a concealed bomb could be installed in electronic devices taken onto aircraft. |

Iraqi security forces are more than seven months into a massive operation to retake Mosul from the Islamic State group, which overran the city and swathes of other territory nearly three years ago. Now, IS's grip on Mosul has been reduced to the Old City and several nearby areas, but the jihadists are still putting up significant resistance and up to 200,000 civilians may be caught in the fighting. |
