US Navy accuses Iranian vessel of dangerous activity Posted: 14 Jun 2017 12:52 PM PDT An Iranian navy vessel conducted an "unsafe and unprofessional" interaction with US ships by pointing a laser at an accompanying Marine Corps helicopter, the US Navy said Wednesday. The incident occurred June 13 as amphibious assault ship the USS Bataan, the USS Cole destroyer and another American ship were sailing in formation in international waters in the Strait of Hormuz. "The Iranian vessel paralleled the US formation, shining a spotlight on Cole," Commander Bill Urban, a spokesman for the navy's Fifth Fleet, said in a statement. |

Driven to distraction: Pyongyang's 'traffic ladies' Posted: 13 Jun 2017 10:23 PM PDT Snapping their heads from side to side, marching into the roads in close-fitting blue uniforms and black heels, the "traffic ladies" who marshal vehicles at the intersections of Pyongyang are an emblematic image of the North Korean capital. Officially known as traffic security officers but universally referred to as traffic ladies, they are chosen for their looks in a society that remains traditionalist in many respects. The 300-odd ladies are unique to Pyongyang, which North Korean authorities are always keen to present in the best possible light despite their nuclear-armed country's impoverished status, and ensure a steady supply of photogenic young women who are the favourite subject of visiting tourists and journalists. |

Could more Central American countries follow Panama in ditching Taiwan? Posted: 13 Jun 2017 11:35 AM PDT Panama's diplomatic abandonment of Taiwan to start ties with China could ripple through other countries in Central America and the Caribbean that still support Taipei, experts say, reflecting Beijing's growing economic might. "I think Dominican Republic and Nicaragua will soon follow," Mexico's former ambassador to China, Jorge Guajardo, tweeted soon after the joint Panama-China statement. Up to 2007 all Central American countries officially recognized Taiwan as the legitimate government of China. |

New solar eclipse simulator shows you what to expect this summer Posted: 13 Jun 2017 04:17 PM PDT A big solar event is taking place across North America in August and to prepare for the big blackout (a whole two minutes in some places) Google and UC Berkeley teamed up to show what the total solar eclipse will look like based on where you are. SEE ALSO: Solar eclipse stamp changes when you touch it They've launched a special simulator, part of the broader Eclipse Megamovie Project, which will give a glimpse of what to expect on August 21. Anyone on the path of the solar eclipse — like Carbondale, Illinois where the max totality is 2 minutes and 40 seconds — is in for a rare show. For those off the path, it's going to be a bit underwhelming. To get a sense of what it'll look like when the moon gets between the sun and the earth in the first total solar eclipse to cross the U.S. in almost 100 years, you just plug in your address or city and watch the simulation. Experience the eclipse from the best spots.Image: screengrab/megamovie projectThe project is stitching together thousands of images from citizens along the path to put together a video of the total solar eclipse. If anyone wants to get involved in the project they can — you just sign up with your Google account and upload materials. Before you attempt to film the sun, though, the team has some safety guidelines to read. We'd recommend following those. Before Aug. 21 rolls around the Megamovie Project has plenty of resources and NASA explainers to become a solar eclipse expert. The next one like this isn't until 2045 — so the time to get involved is now. WATCH: Sun spots |
North Korea says US student released 'on humanitarian grounds' Posted: 14 Jun 2017 10:22 PM PDT North Korea released US student Otto Warmbier "on humanitarian grounds", state media said Thursday, two days after he was evacuated from Pyongyang after falling into a coma while imprisoned in a labour camp. The 22-year-old University of Virginia student from Cincinnati spent more than a year in North Korean detention after being arrested for stealing a political poster from a hotel. "Otto Frederick Warmbier, who had been in hard labour, was sent back home on June 13, 2017 on humanitarian grounds according to the adjudication made on the same day by the Central Court of the DPRK," the state-run Korean Central News Agency said in a one-line statement. |

US 'not winning' in Afghanistan: Pentagon chief Posted: 13 Jun 2017 11:34 AM PDT Pentagon chief Jim Mattis told exasperated lawmakers Tuesday that America still is "not winning" in Afghanistan, as US military commanders push for additional troops to help stabilize the country's security crisis. Mattis's latest assessment comes nearly 16 years after the US-led invasion of Afghanistan and amid a war that continues to claim the lives of US troops each year -- and those of thousands of local forces and civilians. The "Taliban had a good year last year, they are trying to have a good one this year," Mattis told the Senate Armed Services Committee at a hearing about the Pentagon's budget. |
Posted: 14 Jun 2017 01:15 PM PDT Media reports paint James Hodgkinson, the 66-year-old suspect, as a man angry at the surprise election of President Donald Trump in November, with an increase in the number of anti-Trump messages he posted in anti-Republican Facebook groups coming recently. Mr Hodgkinson's interest in politics, however, is not a new development. |
